A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in any vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister said that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified level in any car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in every areas of official activities, from transport usage to communication habits.
